Ephesians 12

Introduction: We share the life of Christ; We have within us Power to make us what God always meant for us to be—children of light, living in His will. Let us so live.

  1. Walk in Love 5:1-6
    1. v. 1: Be imitators of the Father; else not dear children
    2. v. 2: Will offer love (1 John 4:8; 3:16; Heb. 13:15-16).
    3. vv. 3, 4: Love implies hate of certain things (Rom. 12:9).
      1. Fornication: All unlawful sex.
      2. Uncleanness: All other immorality.
      3. Covetousness: Greedy; want more—Luke 12:15.
      4. Not once named: If not think/talk, will not act.
      5. Becometh saints: Fitting, proper, right, suitable.
      6. Filthiness: Moral/spiritual filth.
      7. Foolish talking: Not clean/useful—Col. 4:6.
      8. Jesting: Context suggests humor about unclean matters. Christians should be full of joy/gladness, and there is a type of humor which is innocent/inoffensive (Eph. 4:29).
      9. Not convenient: Fitting, proper (the context).
      10. Giving Thanks: Hearts and lips full of thanksgiving; no place for sinful talk; we have real happiness the world tries to get from unclean jesting (Ps. 1:1-2).
    4. vv. 5, 6: No way deceivers can be right (Gal. 5:19-21).
    5. Love for Father/ Son/ Spirit/ Word/ others keeps us clean.
  2. Walk in the Light 5:7-14.
    1. v. 7: Nothing in common with children of disobedience; no partnership.
    2. v. 8: How fellowship with sin/darkness? (Phil. 2:15-16).
      1. We are partakers of the Divine nature (2 Pet. 1:4).
      2. Of the heavenly calling (Heb. 3:1).
      3. Therefore walk as children of light (2 Cor. 6:14c).
    3. v. 9: This is a description of children of light.
    4. v. 10: Test/examine/scrutinize every word and act.
    5. v. 11: Light cannot compromise with darkness; it can only expose and refute it (Gal. 2:5; 1 John 1:5-7).
    6. v. 12: God’s light is open/free/ acceptable to the clean.
    7. v. 13: Only light of the Word exposes/ reproves—v. 11.
    8. v. 14: No time to rest, vacation, be lax in duty, fall away, not live right.
  3. Walk Carefully 5: 15-17
    1. v. 15: Looking carefully around so as not to stumble.
      1. Intelligently, not in ignorance, so as to miss road.
      2. Daily examine life, to be wise, not stupid (2 Cor. 13:5).
    2. v. 16: Buy up the opportunities which fly by (James 4:14).
    3. v. 17: Not waste life; know and obey Word.
  4. Walk in Worship 5:18-20.
    1. v. 18: Controlled by Spirit’s Word (cf. Col. 3:16).
      1. Think as He thinks by learning what He teaches.
      2. Fill mind, so decisions actions guided by Him.
    2. v. 19: Word produces mutual edification in joyful song.
    3. v. 20: Gratitude; Daily and often (Col. 3:17).

Conclusion:

  1. If walk in Love/ Light/ Care/ Worship/ Humility—all well.
  2. If not—in danger!
